INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY – RESILIM-O ‘COLLABORATIVE DYNAMIC MODELLING’ (CODYM) PROCESS

This internship position has opened at the Association for Water and Rural Development (AWARD), an NGO based in Hoedspruit, Limpopo Province. The appointed intern will form part of the AWARD team working within the USAID RESILIM-O CoDyM program to support collaborative planning and action for water resources protection under conditions of climate change. By fostering collaborative action; improving communication between stakeholders; and improving stakeholders’ capacity for systemic thinking in practice, the CoDyM process provides a basis for systemic planning and action towards adaptively addressing key water security and climate change-related challenges.

Job Purpose: To support collaborative modelling for strategic planning of water resources in the Olifants River Catchment.

The intern will gain experience in collaborative approaches for modelling complex water resource problems and will work with, and learn from, AWARD staff, external consultants and project partners using systems thinking tools in general, and simulation modelling in particular.

Responsibilities:

 Data collection, data analysis and background research as required in the process of building a system dynamics model;
 Organisation of data sources;
 Helping to document the modelling process and the development of the technical simulation model; and
 Assisting with stakeholder engagement and workshop scheduling.

Required qualifications, experience and key competencies:

Minimum requirements:

 A Bachelor’s degree in one or more of the following fields: Environmental Science, Hydrology, Water Resource Management, Ecology, Zoology, Geography (both human and physical), Economics (must include econometrics).
 Familiarity with quantitative approaches.
 Technical competence with Microsoft Excel.

General competencies:

 Teamwork and collaboration.
 Fluency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
 Undertaking literature reviews.
 Computer literacy.
 Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
 Adaptability.
 Planning and project management skills.
 Preference will be given to persons that have previously worked in an NGO environment.
 Willingness to travel and to work irregular hours.

Remuneration package:

The successful applicant will receive a monthly stipend of R 6200.00 plus benefits (medical aid and shared accommodation) in Hoedspruit. In-house training as part of AWARD’s ‘Emerging Professionals’ programme will be provided. Additional funding support for conferences and workshop attendance is available (subject to application and motivation).

Length of contract and location of work:

1 year, fixed-schedule contract, effective 1st May 2017. The RESILIM-O project is implemented from AWARD’s offices in Hoedspruit, Limpopo. The appointee will be based in Limpopo, Hoedspruit.
