Water conservation, demand management and improved waste water treatment
Supporting municipalities with better water resource management includes support for Water Conservation and Demand Management (as required under the NWA of 1998) and improved discharge effluent of waste water treatment plants in Phalaborwa.

Water Conservation and Demand Management

Work started in June 2017 with a capacity development workshop for technical staff from the Maruleng and Ba-Phalaborwa local municipalities, Lepelle Northern Water and the Department of Public Works. An important step has been to understand the water status quo in the two municipalities and to share the results with the municipal managers. The investigations revealed extremely high water demand (higher than most towns in South Africa), water leaks, high proportions of non-revenue water due to faulty meters, illegal connections and poor implementation of regulations and policies.
Wastewater Treatment Works grant

This project aims to develop and implement a turnaround plan for three municipal wastewater treatment plants in the Mopani District, which are a major contributor to poor water quality in the Lower Olifants. Work began in September 2017 with skills and risk assessments and process audits of the plants. With all three WWTW scoring under 25% in Green Drop compliance, the results confirmed the need for urgent intervention.
